Munich Airport deploys innovative Application
Level Firewall
XTRADYNE enables secure integration of Terminal 2
February 23, 2004
BERLIN/MUNICH. Xtradyne Technologies, one of the leading providers
of Application Level Firewall solutions for e-business security, has
deployed its Domain Boundary Controller (DBC)-Product to enable
secure integration of Terminal 2 with the central computer center at
Munich Airport.
Terminal 2, which went into operation in June 2003, sets new
international standards in passenger friendliness -- and with a
connecting flight time of only 30 minutes, a new European bench mark.
This could only be achieved by using the most modern of computer
systems in areas as diverse as baggage handling and flight
information systems. Munich Airport´s team of IT specialists
used the latest generation software technologies in the development
of their distributed, high performance communication systems.
To provide the required level of security along with high levels
fault tolerance, the central airport systems and transport systems
have to be run separately and secured against each other. This
necessitated the use of highly reliable, high performance
Application-Level-Firewalls. Xtradyne´s products allow for this
kind of integration and individual security for Java and C++ based
applications without having to make any modifications to the code,
therefore minimizing costs, increasing simplicity and greatly
reducing the time taken to complete the integration work.
"At Munich Airport security and reliability were - as could be
expected - the most important factors. We were able to demonstrate
with the DBC suite of products high availability and transparent
integration," said Marcus Wittig, Head of Development at Xtradyne
Technologies. "Since the DBC also blocks incorrect or non-standard
conform messages we were also able to increase the overall
reliability of the system."
"The new systems at Terminal 2 such as our Flight Information Display
System (FIDS), the Lufthansa Baggage Management System and the
Docking System are among the most advanced in the world - they then
of course require the most advanced of security systems. The use of
DBCs allows us to not only securely run our applications but also to
seamlessly connect our partners to our advanced infrastructure. The
deployment of the DBC has gone very smoothly, and working together
with Xtradyne has been a pleasure" stressed Harald Englert, Head of
System Services at Munich Airport.

About Munich Airport
Within a decade after opening in May 1992, Munich Airport doubled
both its passenger and cargo traffic to become one of Europe´s
Top 10 hub airports. In 2003, some 24.2 million passengers used
Munich Airport to fly to over 230 destinations worldwide. Munich
Airport´s most recent expansion, Terminal 2, which opened on
June 29, 2003, is a true innovation in the aviation industry. It is a
unique public-private, airport-airline partnership between Munich
Airport and Deutsche Lufthansa AG that provides tailor-made, highly
effective solutions for modern hub traffic. With capacity for 25
million passengers annually, Terminal 2 has doubled Munich
Airport´s former capacity to 50 million passengers per year,
providing this dynamic airport with much-needed room to grow in the
future. Munich´s original Terminal 1 - also with capacity for 25
million passengers annually, has now been returned to its original
function as a point-to-point terminal, providing an optimal place to
take off for low cost carriers, charter and other non Star Alliance
airlines. With both of its super modern terminals, Munich is ideally
positioned to compete with Europe´s other big hub airports. At
the heart of central Europe, Munich Airport is a gateway to Germany -
and beyond. Further Information:
